Eduard Iancu, caricaturist
My name is Eduard Iancu. My passion for caricature began when I was around 16 years old, when I first came into contact with the art of caricature. How did it all begin? The famous caricaturist Ștefan Popa Popa’s exhibited some exceptional works at the Theodor Costescu Palace in my hometown, Drobeta-Turnu Severin. I looked at all the exhibited caricatures with eagerness, interest, and delight. I believe that was the moment when the big click for caricature happened in my life. I went home with a magazine containing caricatures of several celebrities created by master Popa’s.
I collected magazines, newspapers, photographs, and other visual materials and tried to make caricatures myself, even though I still did not know which materials and tools to use. I used only graphite pencils and colored pencils. In no more than two weeks I already had 30 works mounted in passe-partout, ready for an exhibition.
My first exhibition took place at the high school where I studied. The works were admired by both teachers and students. The caricatures were so well received that they were also displayed at a conference held by a political party... one that has since disappeared or been absorbed by a larger one. The exhibited works were also shown on TV in a local news segment.
Not long afterward, I collaborated with a local newspaper, helping them with editorial caricatures for each issue. The years passed, and my passion for caricature was overshadowed by other projects, other activities, university studies, and jobs. But it did not remain that way. It returned to my life in 2011, when I started creating caricatures again and participating with a stand at various events in Romania.
In 2017 I created this website, which has now been rebuilt in a more up-to-date version. In the meantime, I started working on several highly creative projects that inspired me and gave me a new impulse in caricature. Therefore, the “Caricatura Ta” concept aims to include more than twenty styles, techniques, and concepts invented by me. Those other projects helped me aim for such a performance.
At present, I still preserve the imprint of the Popa’s style. I believe my caricatures are delicate and have a jovial, pleasant appearance. I am still on the path of shaping a style that truly represents me. I do not have very many works on display yet, but I can assure you that extraordinary works will be showcased.
